I don’t know about you, but I love hard boiled eggs and deviled eggs. However, I have this mental barrier to hard boiling eggs that just makes me think that it’s too much effort. It probably has something to do with my deep aversion to waiting for water to boil. (Patience is not my forte.)
Good news for anyone else like me who hates waiting for water to boil: you can make hard boiled eggs in the Instant Pot. It may very well take the same amount of time, but there is something about being able to put the lid on and walk away while it does its thing that just works better for me. I’ve seen various references to this being called the 5-5-5 method. You can find slight variations on this all over the internet. Here is my version.
The Process
- Add an inch (about 1.5 cups) of water to the bottom of the Instant Pot.
2. Place the eggs in the rack. They should be above the water, not touching it.
3. Set the Instant Pot for 5 minutes on High Pressure.
4. Let it come up to pressure and cook for the 5 minutes. Then natural release for another 5 minutes.
5. Then natural release for another 5 minutes. Quick release the remaining pressure.
6. Move the eggs to a cold water bath for 5 more minutes.
7. Peel.

Easy Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs
Ingredients
- 28 Eggs Whatever quantity you want to make as long as they fit in a single layer, meaning that you are not setting eggs directly on top of other eggs. I was cooking for a group, so I used 28 eggs which is the most I can fit in my Instant Pot in 2 rounds.
- 1.5 cups Water You’ll need about 1.5 cups to put in the Instant Pot and enough to fill a large bowl with cold water. You’ll be placing the cooked eggs into this bowl of cold water, so leave enough room to account for the water displacement when you add the eggs.
Instructions
- Add 1 inch of water (about 1.5 cups) to the bottom of your instant pot.1.5 cups Water
- Insert your steaming rack, steaming basket, or egg rack. This should be above the water. You want to keep the eggs above the water.28 Eggs
- Place your eggs in the basket / rack. They should not be placed on top of each other (unless you’re using a 2 layer rack, in which case, the eggs won’t be touching).
- Put on the lid and set your instant pot to cook on High Pressure for 5 minutes. Mine takes about 10 minutes to come up to pressure.
- When done, let it do a natural pressure release for 5 minutes, then finish it off with a rapid release.
- Transfer the eggs to a cold water bath for 5 minutes.
- They are now ready to peel.
Equipment
- Steamer rack, steamer basket, or egg holder Insert for Instant Pot I use a 2 level egg rack insert for my Instant Pot. Placing one egg in each hole, I can fit 14 eggs at a time. If I need to make a lot of eggs, I just work in batches.
- Large Bowl This needs to be large enough to fit the eggs in a cold water bath.
- Tongs This will make it easier to transfer the cooked eggs from the Instant Pot to the cold water bath without burning your fingers.
