Dinner Party Diaries – Volume 2 Issue 4
For many, the holiday season is a busy time. Despite several parties, events, and get-togethers, there aren’t always enough hours in the last couple months of the year to spend time with everybody. This year we opted to schedule our normal New Year’s celebration for a bit later as a Post Holiday Slumber Party. Since our version of that party is really about getting to spend time with friends with no one having to rush off or get home early, the specific date is irrelevant.
Incorporating Special Diets Into the Mix
In addition to having a chance to see long-time friends, this Post Holiday Slumber Party was also a fun opportunity to feed them and test my recipe problem solving skills for some special dietary restrictions. Allergies and dietary restrictions included:
- Peanut Allergy
- Tree Nut Allergy (Including coconut)
- Gluten Allergy
- Beef Allergy
- Egg Allergy
- Low Carb
- Limited Fats
So . . . I’ll refer back to my notes on Hosting and Allergy Friendly Dinner Party and mention that sometimes simple foods are a good way to approach the situation. I’ll get into the details of the full menu below, but a couple of super simple ideas were: Caprese Chicken Skewers, Bacon-Wrapped Low Carb BBQ Turkey Hot Dogs, Baked Brie and Pickled Blueberries, blueberries and strawberries, slightly modified version of Green Chili Dip (brought by a guest), assorted cheeses (brought by a guest), and Sausage & Shirataki Noodles in a marinara sauce. There were actually a lot of options.
A key to most of those recipes is that they have a limited number of ingredients. While I’m not one to shy away from complicated recipes, a great way to cut down on potential allergens is to work with a smaller number of ingredients.
That said, this menu has a mix of both simple and more involved recipes, so you can pick and choose what suits your fancy and Time Budget. I hope you’re inspired to host your own Post Holiday Sumber Party and enjoy!
